Paul Ponnudorai
is recognised as one of the best singers/guitarists in the region, and is an icon in the Singapore music scene. TIME magazine pronounced him to be“ "possibly the greatest music interpreter of our times”. Paul sings with astounding virtuosity and is able to musically deconstruct a hackneyed standard, reassemble the parts in startlingly creative ways, and then perform it with a passion that nobody has previously dared. He has an ability to dice songs up, look into their heart and perceive the common vein connecting every genre. His three decades as a musician have seen him performing with Grammy Award winners Eldee Young, Wynton Marsalis, Billy Cobham who invited him to tour Asia as a backing guitarist, and most recently, 2006 Grammy winner Howard Levy. His life has already seen enough hardship and redemption to warrant full bluesman stature. Growing up in the tin-mining town of Ipoh, the youngest of 10 children, his parents were too poor to buy him a metronome, so he learned his exquisite sense of timing by playing along to the creak of an old ceiling fan. Naturally left-handed, he taught himself to play on a right-handed guitar because it was cheaper than a model strung for left-handers (and this is how he still plays). |
